We thank you for your time and consideration of programs and we look forward to a great program year.

We are currently holding meetings on the first Wednesday of every month at Johnnie V’s Restaurant on South 84 Street at 6:30 p.m. We’re looking for Post Advisors/Leaders to attend.

MATA Community Media Exploring Post
A Positive and Productive Summer Alternative for Youth in 2010

he newly formed, MATA Community Media Exploring Post, hosted a summer career development program. Through a grant from the Helen Bader Foundation, MATA Community Media's Education Department was able to train eight youth for four weeks in video production and flash animation. Over the four weeks of intensive training, youth created flash animations from still images and stories taken from "Bullying... is Anyone Listening," children's accounts of bullying produced by SHARP Literacy, Inc. Students also completed a television program that will air on MATA (Time Warner Cable Channel 14 and AT&T U-verse Channel 99).

Youth used MATA Community Media's studios and equipment to produce a 30-minute television program which included a top ten music countdown, film reviews and an interview with hip hop star Prankweazy (mock). They also produced a music video, interviewed Sarah Patterson from TRUE Skool about youth involvement and graffiti, and interviewed manager Jen Bottesi of Fondy Farmers Market. Some of the youth attended and videotaped a Rotary Club meeting. A lunch was provided and youth were educated about healthy eating options.

Over the course of the program youth had fun, ate healthy and learned valuable career skills. If you are a young person, or know a young person 14 -20 years old interested in an upcoming opportunity with the MATA Community Media Exploring Post, please contact Shannon Mattox at smattox@mccbsa.org or at (414) 443-2860.

Individual medals were received for the top three times in the competition. The top three individual times were Jeff Nielson: 1:57, Mario Giacobassi: 1:58, and Brandon Czarnecki: 2:00. Explorers also received trophies for the top three relay times. The top three relay times were 1:52, 1:59, and 3:36. Everyone who was there competing did a great job. It was a fun and exciting event with about 75 spectators cheering the competitors on.

Thank you to those who volunteered their time to help make the event run so smoothly. This was the first competition that the NSFD will be hosting every August. All Fire Exploring Posts are invited to participate in the camaraderie, excitement, and challenges that this event has to offer. A flyer will come out again in June of 2010 with the date and times of the next competition. So if you know anyone that wants to compete, please send them over for the festivities. We would love to see over 100 competitors in the 2010 challenge. If there is a larger turnout next year, there may be new additions to the event. Thanks again to all that participated!

For more information about next year’s event, please contact Jeremy Boehlke at (414) 526-9928, or at jboehlke@nsfire.org; or Shannon Mattox at (414) 443-2860, or smattox@mccbsa.org.

What Schools Say About Learning for Life in Their Schools…

Learning for Life at Oliver Wendell Holmes School
Oliver Wendell Holmes has been fortunate to have the Learning for Life Program this year. Students receive weekly presentations on character building and have really shown a lot of enthusiasm and interest in the program. They’ve had a variety of topics including decision-making, safety, critical thinking, interpersonal skills, respect, and self confidence. The students have shown a lot of carry over of the message and are talking about the presentations and the role playing they have done. Teachers have also expressed a lot of need to continue in the program and look forward to the discussions on these important topics. They’ve been so happy to be a part of the program and to have this much needed curriculum at their school!
